This is an interesting and unusual piece of vintage jewelry from an estate sale. I studied this with my loupe for a long time trying to figure out what it is. For a minute I thought I got really lucky and found a piece of black coral -- it would be great to find a branch this size. But what I came up with is that it is a piece of wood that has been varnished and polished black. You can see the grain of the wood at the bottom of the piece and there are a couple of small areas near where the bumps from twigs were that are chipped and the wood shows through. These chips are very tiny and barely discernible with the naked eye. I am sure this symbolized something to someone, but I don't know what. If you recognize this and have an idea, I'd love to hear from you. Perhaps it was an indigenous piece of wood from a trip they took somewhere? (I have some earrings and a necklace like that -- meryl wood from a very special trip to Oregon.)

Anyway, the pendant measures 1.5 inches long and is about 1/4 inch wide. Beautiful, lustrous, shiny black.

It is in wonderful clean condition with very little signs of vintage wear, aside from the tiny chips mentioned above.
